Learning to Use a Rubrik's Cube
Earlier this school year I saw my friend Liam using a Rubik’s Cube and solving it really fast. I thought that it looked fun and challenging, so I wanted to try it too. Since then I have loved Rubik’s Cubes. I was very frustrated at first, but I didn’t give up. Finally, I solved it and it felt AWESOME! This is how I did it.
First, I focused on the most common cube, the 3x3, but I decided to work on the simpler 2x2 first so I could learn the basics. You can get a budget cube as your starter – they are between $3-10. I mostly watched a variety of YouTube tutorials to learn the patterns and algorithms to solve them. My favorite was by a YouTuber named WIRED. If I made a mistake in solving, I would look back at the video, re-watch to see where I went wrong, and try again. I also did warm-ups to make my fingers faster and get the feel of the cubes. I think at least 10-15 minutes a day for practice is good.
As I got better, I wanted to get cubes that turn faster. I also got a Pyraminx, which is shaped like a pyramid, an Ivy Cube, which has corners that turn, and a 4x4 which I FINALLY solved during quarantine! It’s also fun to help my friends now that I know what I am doing a little better.
Solving a Rubik’s Cube takes focus, patience, and determination. They also help you exercise your brain, relieve stress, and have fun! Maybe you can learn to solve one, too!!!
