To the Hillandale Community:
This year marks the 31st year of Stories, Poems, and Sketches, and it proved to be quite an interesting year. Originally in planning for the publication, the committee decided on the theme of “2020 Vision”. We were unaware in January how accurate this title would be, as 2020 has had an unprecedented look and feel.
The Stories, Poems and Sketches Committee wanted for the “2020 Vision” edition to include multimedia entries. This allowed for our Hillandale students to express themselves in even more ways and flex those 21st century technology skills. We could not be more proud of the work that was submitted by our students. Most of the pieces were created at home during the COVID-19 closure. This took motivation, dedication, creativity, parent support and teacher support. I thank EVERY person who supported an entry. There were unexpected obstacles to overcome and we are grateful for your perseverance.
While this year posed different challenges, I enjoyed my email inbox becoming flooded with submissions for the publication. I enjoyed every Zoom meeting with the SPS Committee, discussing challenges and learning new modes of technology to support the publication. A special thanks to The Stories, Poems and Sketches Committee: Sarah Moon, Joy Moffett, Annie Loether, Haley Cobb, Kaitlin Burris, Ethan Montgomery, Beth Senger-Knotts, Nadirah Pitts and Amy Nichols-Drew. These dedicated educators volunteered their time and energy in making this publication accessible in print and on the new Stories, Poems and Sketches website found at hillandalesps2020.weebly.com. In addition, special thanks to our administrative team, Miah Hart-Olivis and Michael Bloom who continue to show support for our students and foster their written and artistic expression. Thank you as well to Durham Public Schools for their partnership and collaboration in providing ways in which we can still connect with our students, even when we cannot be together in person.
Finally, we would not have a publication without our brilliant, resilient, and confident Hillandale scholars! Thank you to all of you for your stories, poems, sketches, videos, presentations, artwork, time, effort and contributions to the Hillandale Community!
Special congratulations to our 5th Graders who contributed to the publication and are Hillandale graduates. We will miss them and wish them the BEST!
